At Saturday morning’s business meeting, President Hart called the conference to order as committee leaders presented updates on ongoing initiatives and organizational efforts throughout the region.
A significant focus of the discussions centered on civic engagement and advocacy at the state level. Conference leaders encouraged participants to travel to the State Capitol in Tallahassee to demonstrate support for equal justice legislation currently under consideration. The State Conference is also actively involved in several legal actions aimed at protecting voting rights from measures perceived to undermine fair access to the ballot.
To help mobilize supporters, buses are being organized from multiple locations across the state to bring advocates together in Tallahassee. Additionally, attendees learned that three branches within the region are currently working toward reactivation, signaling continued growth and renewed community involvement.
One of the conference’s featured sessions, titled Power Hour, was led by Chairman Leon W. Russell. During the session, Russell emphasized the importance of accountability within local branches, reminding attendees that all branch expenditures — including routine fixed expenses — should receive approval from Executive Committees.
Russell also reinforced the critical importance of voting and civic participation in advancing the causes represented by the organization. He encouraged branches to focus on increasing youth engagement and expanding membership efforts to strengthen long-term impact.
Another important session focused on immigration issues, where workshop leaders discussed how immigration laws and policies continue to significantly affect minority communities nationwide. The workshop highlighted the broad social and economic implications these policies have across diverse populations.
Among the conference’s major takeaways were the urgent call to vote, the importance of encouraging others to participate in elections, and the strong presence and leadership shown by youth and college division members throughout the event.
